One of the odd creatures that Travis first encounters in the Shadowlands is a beast that has the body of a spiny shrub and the head of a slug. They move in herds following either the streak across the sky or some strange music led by an unseen piper. The beasts have the ability to infect those they come into physical contact with and mutate them into another LODI. It takes at least three or more to infect a soul in this shadowy world.

According to The Dunwoody manuscripts, the LODI have existed in the other worldly realm since the beginning and are said to be a glitch in the Universal Aetherial Matrix. Unsure of their origins, Dunwoody speculates them to be corrupted avatars gone astray and is said to have given them the name LODI, for Lost Omni Directional Icons.
